---

This is the sweetest moment of my BP career. There's nothing quite like having your very own monster.

Lophomastix made his mark right out the gate, going 21-0-0 and was almost always my last fight read for the turn (I save my veterans and exciting warriors for last when I read my turns... get the boring, young guys out of the way then read the GOOD stuff!).

Lophomastix is a tweaked and refined finesse elf from the design CAESAR INVICTUS posted on the original Pitt eons ago. I got a rollup that perfectly matched his ideal finesse elf and through messages on Pitt he guided my gladiator Tinna to a 79-54-3 career, which at the time for me was a phenomenal record and old age for a gladiator. Along the way I found Chlamydia in my stables, who entered the elf kill record books in third place at a young age with a frightening 46-21-7 history. Chlamyida, like Tommy Twelve Hands, Kerboga and many other finesse elves I have run, seemed to have run into a training wall. After 50 fights trains become rare for about half of the finesse elves I've run, which leads to perms and death. Lophomastix never encountered a barrier to training. In the same vein, neither has my now current, eldest, finesse elf Carlia. Those elves are tricky! With little armor they must navigate the big dumb brutes of the lower ranks, and attempt to avoid perms. Actually, this is a struggle all the way thru the upper ranks. Finesse elves are tricky tricky tricky.

At first, I was secretive about Lophomastix's stats and strat, but as time went on I couldn't resist asking for advice from PALOR and DUX MORTALITAS, for which I'm sure Lophomastix thrived and survived the top 20.

Ah, now for the good stuff!

17(9)-24(17)-20(12)-24(19)-9(4)-10

I tried and tried and tried and tried to get his INT to 25. Lord have mercy, did I try!!! I only tried for 25 dex his last 50 fights or so.

Needless to say, with a starting INT of 19, Lopho picked up a few skills.
Is an expert (7) in Open Hand
Is mastered (9) in Javelin
Is mastered (9) in Dodge
Is mastered (9) in Parry
Is mastered (9) in Throw
Is mastered (9) in Charge
Is mastered (9) in Lunge
Is mastered (9) in Disarm
Is mastered (9) in Initiative
Is mastered (9) in Feint
Is mastered (9) in Brawl

I would have liked to have had a masters in open hand, but it wasn't ultimately necessary. Hopefully this chink in his armor won't come back to bite him!

There you have it, your new monster....

Big congratz Vic. That was quite the disarm seminar; especially finishing with the hand! The title of this thread should be "Don't swing it at me if you want to keep it" cheers

Heheheheh. I love the title suggestion. Lopho put on quite the clinic, didn't he? I wish he had ALWAYS been so Johnny-On-The-Spot with disarms in the upper ranks, but I'm certainly not complaining.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons that this is one of my favorite Monster fights. This fight will likely inspire people to experiment more with disarm. Changing the dynamic of the skills, styles, armors etc used by many.

You gotta do it right, if you're going to disarm, otherwise you waste too many attack opportunities in futile disarm attempts. Same for sweep and throw. More so for sweep, as you only get at most 3 opportunities to throw, unless yer guy gets lucky and picks up another throwable weapon, but that's another story, right Dux?

Re: Lophomastix (139-62-5) vs Luka Skyrunner (201-153-9) Monster Fight

I would like to add, for newer managers reading this thread, and seeing this 4 year old gladiator with a mountain of skills and crazy high stats, it can seem nigh impossible to achieve such a monster. Where to start? Ah, you see, that is where the game becomes crazily nuanced. There are many paths to achieving a veteran gladiator, with some being better than others. Great, you've hit 50 or 100 or 150 or 200 fights, but does your gladiator look like swiss cheese from perm damage, does she have a winning record?

Sure, Lophomastix became a monster with 10 masters and an expert, but how did he get there? What skills did I prioritize? He was raised with a cocktail of skills which I have tweaked over the years. If I want a short lived killer I will train one way, or if I want a long lived gladiator, I will train another. I stick to an emphasis on the basics - weapon, init and defense. For a very smart gladiator, such as lophomastix, I will select a weapon which has many supportive skills, such as the javelin (lunge, charge, throw, disarm, sweep - never got to that one), or a less intelligent finesse elf (starting int of 13ish) will get perhaps a shortsword (lunge, disarm). A veteran manager (and I don't remember who) said, on the original Pitt forum, that he strove for his gladiators to have an expert in their weapon by their 20th fight. I hold this to heart with most of my finesse elves, and did with Lophomastix.

Stats? Well, with a 12 con, I pushed it to 17 ASAP to assist with the rest of the training. Dux helped me realize how stat crazy I can get with young gladiators (under 50 fights) but that isn't a problem with my finesse elves. I keep to a rather strict stat/skill/skill training regimen. I will tweak the ratio depending on how his training is going or how frustrated I get trying to reach a skill or stat plateau.

Speaking of plateaus, think of 5 as being the lowest acceptable level, depending on the skill, followed by 7 then of course, 9. Go for a 5 right away in your weapon, in other words. It may seem like your idiot warrior took forever to train his weapon from 3 to 4, but you will see a dramatic difference going from 4 to 5. Same holds for going from 6 to 7, and from 8 to 9.

Weapons selection is is a big issue with young managers. The best advice I can give is to scroll through the Hall of Records and look at the weapons wielded by the various record holders. Some weapons seem to keep turning up in the record books for a reason.

This piece of advice applies to newbs and veterans alike: Backup your bloodpit directory on a regular basis. The more you fight, the more it becomes a goldmine, a treasure trove of information. If you lose your bloodpit directory in a hard drive crash and do not have a backup, you have lost your ability to hopefully not repeat mistakes and tweak and refine successful gladiators. And to research opponents. Heheheheh

Alright, I'm done rambling. Time for bed, I have a photoshoot in the morning.

You opponent almost certainly had a higher presence than your warrior, so from that perspective it was a legitimate win on his part ;-) PRE has it's uses, but unfortunately, it's just not generally useful enough to bother allocating points to during warrior creation.

Lopho still had a 4 pre at that point. As you say, no sense in allocating any points to it. Heck, I didn't give lopho any pre raises until his 48th fight.

Hey Vic, this may be a gap in my knowledge or just a memory lapse (certainly not an uncommon event for me), but I don't recall ever seeing a sweeping javelin. I don't think it is possible for a javelin to sweep. I'd be tickled to death if someone could show me otherwise though.

From what I gather javelins are pretty useless for sweeping. But I'm not against trying it once I have built up the other skills associated with the weapon. Which would mean trying to sweep 150+ fight warriors. Failed sweep attacks could mean death.

If I recall any weapon weight 3 or less is incapable of sweeping - tripping of course is different. (certainly could be mistaken here though).

I believe BP has short handled, one-handed scythes rather than the staff scythe often found in the hands of the grim reaper.

I agree.  I have always pictured it as more of a sickle because of its low weight.

However, I believe that tripping was a major part of fighting with a sickle or a scythe. Check out Ars Gladiatoris by Hector Paulus Mair, completed around 1542. It is basically a book about peasant combat in the medieval times. There are some good reenactments (interpretations) of it on youtube. A pretty good one for the sickle is entitled simply "Medieval Sickle Combat 1". I recommend that everyone check some of these out because they are like porn for Bloodpit fans.

Yes, the Japanese farmers used the short scythe, which they call a kama. BP's scythe is a kama, I guess.

If we want to get truly picky about BP's implementation of weapons, the francisca was a thrown weapon. Due to its ungainly weight distribution it would tumble end over end, bouncing on the ground and erratically hopping up, making it an imposing thing coming at you because you never knew which way it would bounce before either splitting or missing you.

I'm typing this from memory, so some details may be wrong.
