Rough Reignition

Post  Lelu Dallas on Wed Jun 03, 2015 4:29 pm

Wow so after not playing in 20 years I kinda suck!

I wonder if the system has changed much since the early 90s?

But I guess I have to readapt to the game.

I miss the 'graphics' for hard blows/permanent injuries. But it is sooo cool to play again.

Yeah I played PBM back in the day, same basic format but its a lot harder to get wins now! Wink

We used to send a check for 5$ with our strategy sheets filled out by hand via snailmail to play in Jr High. That was per team per turn. I know kids that were on the net already, that did theirs online then, but we didn't have that.

I have seen it is much harder for me to get wins. I don't recall the 'activity level' function that goes into your strategy, but maybe I smoke too much. I like that so far I have been given a fresh team to play with every other week. (And totally free and online! The future is great.)

It'll take a while maybe, but it is fun to be experimenting with it again.

I suppose certain parameters could have been altered in the algorithms over time,.idk. fun eitherway.

Yeah I played in a similar way but in the UK . Took ages to get the turn, I remember waiting for the postie!

The basic concepts with race/styles/weapons are roughly the same. There is a manual somewhere on the forum I haven't looked at it in a while so I cant remember where.

If you loved the old PBM game you will love this, if you are really stuck with something or you want any pointers Pm me I will try and help. Although its prob more fun working out things yourself. If you read the threads there is also a lot of good info.

I am learning to scan this forum for tactical strategy now, yeah.

I will continue to try , hit and miss, for now. But thanks for offer of help.

I took three permanent injuries in a team fight via the peasant scum last turn, so it's a helluva learning curve I'm up against!

If you don't like the new team rollup, you can wait a couple of weeks and another one will be created for you.  What's your mgr #?

There are some weapons/styles that are broken in the game. Pro-tip: don't add any points to presence when making a gladiator.

I'm manager 938, Rebecca Buck.

What weapons/styles are broken? Damn this is info I need to know!

Do we know if there are plans to fix the code?

Also doesn't presence effect whether the ref spares you or not?

Welcome. I was around back when the game started. A lot has changed but I think the single largest change was not in the code. People know how to setup and manage their warriors much better than they did back in those days, which means that it is all in all harder to win. Also the way that warriors are ranked is much more fair now so there are not as many easy kills. There have been changes in encumbrance, armor and weapons as well as some changes in how styles work, but the game is still fun.

Regarding styles, Defend and Slash are the only two styles that really just don't work well. Other styles can all be effective if you know what you're doing.

So maybe 'Parry' is suitable instead of 'Defend' and 'Strike' or 'Bash' with swords instead of 'Slash'?

Don't forget lunge if you are using a sword.

I sent a few challenges your way looking for easy kills for my young guys. Think of it as a fruit basket from my stables. Razz

Pre has an effect on how many times your guy will plea to end the match and whether the ref will take pity on your guy and helps with challenges/avoids, but I find adding points to other stats will help your guy win/kill so he doesn't have to worry as much about being heavily damaged and begging the ref to stop the fight.

I would run the max 5 teams you are allowed and set up all 25 warriors with diff combos of all aspects of warrior set up.
You are also going to learn more in single fights than team fights and get more trains.

I know a lot of new managers only run a couple of teams to try and get the hang of it first and go into team fights to get better records, but max it out in singles is the way I would go.

So you might get some not so good win/loss ratios at the start.
So what?
you will learn loads Very Happy

Thanks for the advice everyone. Someone mentioned 'broken' weapons too?

Also funny enough , my one win came on 'defend' but they kept attacking not defending.

It's not that you can't win on either Defend or Slash, it's that they just don't give very many wins. But it would be great if someone discovered the method that livens those styles, so by all means, work it!

Great ax is an example of a weapon that used to be...well...great, but that has been diminished tremendously. Again, you can get wins with it, but it is not going to give you very impressive results almost no matter how great a warrior you put with it. But then again, maybe you will find the way to make it work well.

Weird. I am thinking such nuances must lie in the algorithms?

Here's the unofficial BP help file. I have found some of this information to be quite helpful. Some of it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Cool. Thanks. In time for me to maybe do better this round.

I think my 4th team finally has two warriors I want to work hard on cultivating.

Well, if you think about it. Bloodpit is quite the balancing act in respect that each style is relative to each other style. If you change one thing it affects all others. I suspect there were some minor tweaks done at some point that just had an effect that has caused some styles to increase in effectiveness vs others and some others to wane. Also, we have to bare in mind that not all styles are meant to work well in singles fights. Some styles were designed to work in team fights. So a style that does not work in singles is not necessarily broken.

I have tried slash a few times, my best effort so far was Cameron who ended with a record of 99.79.2! Not great but it's a winning record. Also my warrior Smeg has got slash as his main strat just now, his record stands at 20.13.0 at the moment.
Never once have i had a winning record with Defend!!

4-16-1 this round. Doh!

The one loss, from one of my favorite newer warrior's, was right as she was about kill the dude, because the ref acknowledged my attempt to surrender 1 1/2 minutes prior. Doh! Doh!

Anyway, five teams a turn is the max you can run right?

I have more questions, but am too miserable about my shitty record this round to think of them.

Personally, I like all styles EXCEPT Defend and Slash.
I have some warriors making use of just about everything else.

It seems to me there; some inherent advantage in using parry or lunge as they are fighting styles you can actually train in...

Just make sure you pick an appropriate weapon... a guy with a ball & chain running lunge will soon find his blood on the sands.
