Welcome to the Pitt.  This is the third incarnation of the forum, and longest running, I believe.  The first two having been lost when free hosting services shut down.  There is a lot of information and stuff you can learn about Blood Pit scattered all over the forums.

And thanks for the (numerous) tips that helped me start with decent results - way to go though...
I am not sure being used to a similar-but-actually-not-that-much pbem helps, I still have to un-learn some stuff in order to improve here.

I had had a look already, and just read a bit more.

I understand the big (long-term...) goals are to get a Monster slot and to grab "best record at 50/100/... fights for race XX" + some specific contests such as Kill Fest.

Still surprised by the fact that some (relatively) young 100 or 150 fight guys are sent to the Monsters, whereas they still probably can improve their stats. Usual reason is they near the 9-perm level on one or several locations, I guess?

Perms are usually the reason why a veteran is sent to the Monsters.  Though, if a good new team rollup appears, rather than just simply replacing the gladiators, some managers will send the old team to the Monsters first.

The first thing a newb manager should do is strive to get gladiators to make it to 50 fights.  Then 100.  Then maybe hit those goals with a better record than before.  Then try hitting those goals with fewer perms.  Then see how long you can have a fighter go without receiving any perms.  I think my record is 118 fights with KETSCH (my only UW winner).
