The Dream:

At the time of Misery's birth there were several universally held stereotypes about orcs and styles that I wanted to disprove.
- Horcs were poor long-term warriors.
- Horcs couldn't make use of high dex.
- In the upper ranges, lunge was nearly unbeatable.
- Orcs with big clumbsy weapons were the least likely to beat a good lunger.

I also had the hope that this new Misery would become a tourney champion as did my original Misery.

The Reality:
When Misery's rollup came in it was almost exactly what I had been waiting for.
He ran highly offensive in his younger days, but as he aged I slowed him down little by little and trained him for the defensive styles that I wanted to have him use in his twilight years. When encumbrance was tweaked to have more impact, I felt that was the end of the lungers default dominance at the top. Misery's high dex gave him several advantages when he ran defensively against them. First, he had a great dodge. And second, when he hit he was likely to gain the aiming point advantage and also PCB advantage, which greatly increased odds of perming. Fortunately, my projections turned out to be true. All these things being what they were, still didn't guarantee an easy ride, as managers at the top are an experienced and crafty bunch. They are always tuning their warriors to keep ahead of the curve. Some of those managers started to use Disarm to alarming success, and as I had failed to train Misery up to master Brawl (even at 200 fights). He began losing his weapons and taking losses (even scum were disarming him). It took him a lot longer than I expected to master brawl, and just a handful of fights before his monstering he finally got it. Mastering brawl allowed him to hang on to his weapons a little longer and that gave him the time he needed to lay in the heavy blows. It was in his later days as well that he began working on the hammer throw concept, which I had never seen any orc try before. Surprisingly, he was 85% accurate with his throws with 80% of the hits dealing massive damage. Even with full-plate's dex penalties, Misery was able to get his throws off first strike the vast majority of the time with the above accuracy and damage. It almost guaranteed that he would start a fight with a massive offensive advantage. These throws also had high odds of leaving perms, and although I never heard from the managers he fought, I imagine they must have cringed at the thought of matching against Misery at this point of his evolution -  win or loose, perms were the likely outcome by way of an incoming hammer or aimed great pick strike. Warriors at the top almost invariably have their share of critical perm zones, so no one wants to take chances against consistent perm machine.

Once I was satisfied that Misery couldn't improve any further, I decided to monster him in hopes that he would meet up with Lord Darius. I really wanted to see how Misery could handle that brutal warrior. Ratyr was my second choice (were choice allowable). I actually thought that Misery might have better chances against LD than Ratyr as the boar spear charges are easier to defend against than are lunges from great swords. I'll never know if my theory regarding Misery vs LD was correct or not, but fighting Ratyr was a fantastic read. Misery performed better than I expected against him, taking the aiming point bonus with every shot and landing a brutal throw straight off. What a show!

Dream doesn't always marry Reality, but in this case is a match made in Heaven or Hell depending on which side of the sands you stand.

The amazing thing about this fight is that Misery was in medium damage before that final hit, so that hit did enough damage to take Misery from medium damage to death. When a warrior is at 25% of their hp or less they are in heavy damage. Misery would have had a minimum of 79 HP at the start of the fight by my calculations based on his stats. That means that he had at least 20 hp left before that final hit. And since he was in medium damage it could have been as much as 39 hp left, so that final hit was HUGE! I have only seen a handful of hits like this in my entire BP career and 3 of those times were in Monster title fights where my warrior either was a newly crowned Monster or was a defending Monster. As the old Horkish saying goes, "Live by the great pick; die by the great pick!"
